Sinograce Chemical has launched a washable pressure-sensitive adhesive label adhesive for use on washable film labels for PET bottles and trays. This allows for efficient separation of labels from bottles during the recycling process, optimizing the recycling and reuse of PET materials.

Single-Step Separation of PET Labels

Recycled PET plastic bottles undergo a series of processes before becoming high-purity flakes ready for subsequent processing. Labels with various pressure-sensitive adhesives, in particular, can leave adhesive adhering to the PET flakes after removal, requiring high temperatures and detergents to partially remove. Flakes that cannot be removed must be discarded.

In contrast, using washable pressure-sensitive adhesive for labels makes removal much easier. Generally, European countries use hot alkaline water at temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees Celsius and other reagents to remove pressure-sensitive adhesive from PET flakes. Labels made with BOPP facestock and washable pressure-sensitive adhesive automatically peel off PET bottle flakes after soaking in hot alkaline water for a period of time. The BOPP label facestock, due to its lower density, floats on the water surface, while the PET flakes, due to their higher density, sink to the bottom, thus separating the bottle cap, label, and flakes in a single step.

This design not only simplifies the "label removal," "friction cleaning," and "high-temperature cleaning" steps in the recycling process, but also improves the purity and recovery rate of the recycled flakes.
